Dining in Chicago

While in Chicago last month for the Greening the Heartland Conference I wandered west on Randolph to an area the concierge referred to as  restaurant row.”  Just west of Harpo Studios I came across City Winery Chicago, and given my love of wines and wineries, decided to check it
out.  The restaurant has a lovely patio area out front and a large, open dining area with exposed beams, and large, glass walls that show off the stainless tanks. Since I was dining alone, I hopped up to the bar and started talking to the bartender about which wines they make on-premises.  I settled on a glass of the 2012 West Loop Red which is a blend of Lodi Valley Zinfandel and Petit Sirah.  Once I had my selection made, she immediately
offered to give me a tour, so glass of wine in hand, off we went.  The operation doesn’t seem large, but very organized and they do produce several different varietals on-site.  Post tour I decided on an order of the burrata with marinated tomatoes accompanied by chilled, grilled asparagus.  Both were wonderful, but I’ll confess I’m a sucker for good burrata any time.  So, next time you’re in Chicago and looking for someplace new to eat, check out City Winery Chicago, 1200 W Randolph Street.

Nice Paella Wine

I was invited to some friends home for dinner the other evening and they were serving paella prepared over an open fire on their patio so I went in search of a nice Spanish red to take with me.  I immediately thought of something from Rioja and found a wonderful Tempranillo that was full-bodied, smooth, and complemented the flavors of the paella beautifully.  This 2007 Vina Eguia Rioja Reserva is a great addition to my cellar.

A Textbook Wine

While at the Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco over the weekend I ventured into the attached Chambers Eat + Drink for an after dinner glass of wine.  From their extensive listing I chose a glass of the 2011 Textbook Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.  The wine was big, bold, and a joy to drink. The was a small hint of jamminess on the front end and then the finish had a touch of oakiness.  Very enjoyable.

I’ve been drinking Louis Martini 2010 Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon for a while now every time I go to my favorite restaurants in Indianapolis.  Last night, while dining out in Wisconsin I found it on the wine list.  Of course, I had to get a bottle.  The Martini is reasonably priced and is immensely drinkable.  Dry without strong tannins.  Smooth finish without becoming shallow.  A nice amount of fruit without becoming fruity.  If you’re looking for something you can recommend to friends with confidence, this is your cabernet.

Not An “Every Day” Wine

I was at wine tasting last week where dozens of distributors were presenting their close-outs and discontinued vintages at sharply discounted prices. Last year I found a couple of really nice wines at incredible prices and used the opportunity to stock up the cellar with “every day” wine. This year the selection was a bit thin. I was able to find one wine that I particularly liked, but at a list price of $46.99 it is well beyond what I consider an “every day” wine.

The wine that I really enjoyed was the 2008 Mauritson Russian River Pinot Noir.  I found this wine to be lush and velvety on my tongue and smooth going down without any strong tannins.  I can definitely see drinking this both while preparing the evening meal and during the meal itself.

A Colleague Recommendation

Here is a wine recommendation from Terri at Glendale Family Dentistry.  Terri has recently fallen in love with the 2010 Louis M. Martini Sonoma County Cabernet Savignon.  This wine is a very approachable, modestly priced wine that is drinking really well right now.  According to the Louis M. Martini website, this cab, “…has fresh red plum and blackberry jam aromas and flavors that are supported by caramelized and toasted oak.”  Terri says she just really likes it!

While at the first Green Dentistry Conference powered by the Eco-Dentistry Association this past weekend I had the opportunity to dine with my friends Brad Stewart and Vicki Cox where they hired Kris Dews as the chef for the evening.  Kris is amazing!  If you ever need a personal chef for an event I definitely recommend you give Kris a call.

To open dinner Kris served a wonderful 2009 L’ecole Cabernet Sauvignon.  This cab kicked open our palates and got them ready for Kris’ truly wonderful tomato, basil, and garlic emulsion that started the meal.

If you’re heading out to Utah in the Salt Lake City area I highly recommend you check out Brad &  Vicki’s cottages for rent and then have Kris prepare you an amazing meal.

Another Great Pizza Wine

Okay, anyone who reads this blog regular has to have figured out one of my favorite food and wine pairings is pizza and Italian red.  For some reason, call me crazy, these two things just naturally go together.  Well, the other night I was at dinner with a friend introducing him to a local pizzeria he’d never been to before and we ordered a bottle of the 2011 Tedeschi Lucchine Valpolicella to accompany our Margarita pizza.  The fresh, lively fruit balanced well against the garlic on the pizza and brought out the flavor of the basil and Mozzarella.  Another one I’m now in search of to add to my personal cellar.

A New Year’s Wine

The 2006 Chateau La Fleur de Gazin Pomerol – scrumptious

Like many people I went out to dinner on New Year’s Eve.  My friend and I had a really nice dinner after seeing “Les Mis”, but the most memorable part of the meal was the wine.  I’ve been on a bit of a Bordeaux kick of late, and was looking for a nice one to accompany our steak without breaking the bank.  Most of the selection on the wine list was way above my budget for the evening, and in spite of the sommelier trying to upsell me into one double or triple my budget I settled on the Chateau Lafleur de Gazin 2006 Pomerol.  This was truly an amazing wine – dry, full of structure, and hardy enough to stand up to our beef. Now, I’m on a quest to find this for my own cellar.

Los Dos Grenache – Syrah 2010

At Father Fats in downtown Stevens Point, WI the other night I ordered the 2010 Los Dos Campo de Borja Grenache – Syrah.  From Aragon and the slopes on the edge of the Sierra Iberica,  this wine blends 15% Syrah with rich Grenache produced from 35 to 50 year old vines.  As Father Fats is a tapas restaurant, I found this wine to be very pleasant with all of the various dishes we ordered and shared throughout the evening, from the cheese board starters all the way through to dessert.
