I was invited to some friends home for dinner the other evening and they were serving paella prepared over an open fire on their patio so I went in search of a nice Spanish red to take with me. I immediately thought of something from Rioja and found a wonderful Tempranillo that was full-bodied, smooth, and complemented the flavors of the paella beautifully. This 2007 Vina Eguia Rioja Reserva is a great addition to my cellar.

Last evening some friends and I went to Diamond in the Rough at Kahn’s Fine Wines & Spirits in Indianapolis. Kahn’s puts on this event about once per year where they invite their distributors to showcase brands from closeouts, discontinued, or heavily discounted vintages. Here are some of the notables from last evening:
EOS Zinfandel 2005/2007 – this zin had aged really well and is definitely ready to drink now!
Nozzole Chianti Classico – if you like chianti, you’ll like this one!
Escudo Rojo 2008 – one of my favorites of the evening
Sol de Agosto Red Blend 2009 – a 100% organic blend of tempranillo, merlot, and syrah
Can Vendrell Barrica Tinto 2004 – a really nice cab blend
PKNT Carmenere 2010 – a really lovely Chilean Carmenere. I went home with a couple cases of this one!
